The mod remains in development and a very early version of the game was released in 2008. In addition, Medieval II features elements such as a greater focus on heraldry and castles which also favours an adaptation to the SoIaF world. The new game's focus on medieval history and units directly used in A Song of Ice and Fire, such as knights, pikemen and crossbowmen, made it a much easier fit for the world of the Seven Kingdoms.

The mod was re-launched in 2006, after the release of Medieval II: Total War. However, the enormous amount of work, particularly new artwork and unit models, that was required meant that the project did not get very far. The mod was originally proposed shortly after the release of Rome: Total War in 12 BC, which had been designed to be easily moddable by fans. Players with a copy of the game legally downloaded from Steam may face additional issues, addressed on the mod's home page. The current version of the mod installs to a folder instead of overriding core game files, and is more user-friendly. I would give both of these a try if you are looking for something new and exciting and decide which one you like more.Īlso, Lands to Conquer gold is a must have because it seems like the same things as Vanilla but many bugs and problems have been ironed out offering a satisfying game.Use of the mod requires the player to own a copy of both Medieval II and Kingdoms. Also, both these mods slow down combat significantly a And they added in the Bulgars, who I think are an important faction. I have limited experience with Broken Crescent (due to CTDs) but they seem to focus more on Eastern factions which look very good. The knights and heavy armoured infantry is more rare but is a powerful unit on the battlefield. Even mounted seargents have a role in early campaign. In the earlier period, Cavalry is the main focus and cavalry has been overhauled to be much more effective. Also, there is a focus on peasent/militia units that make up the bulk of armies just like in RL. And game mechanics changed up (missile effects, cavalry charges etc). Well balanced, lots of cool new features, relatively stable. The Orthodox factions look awsome, many more units for all factions. If you want something that is challenging and more authentic historically then try either Stainless Steel 6.3+6.4 OR Broken Crecent.

If you like vanilla but think there are too many bugs then try - Lands to Conquer Gold The best mod really depends on what you are looking to do with the game.
